LAGOS—FORMER Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Temisan Raymond Omatseye, has faulted online media report that he has been convicted by a court, describing the report as stale news. According to him, he has been discharged and acquitted by Justice Yargata B. Nimpar, of the Court of Appeal .
Omatseye in a statement through George Umunnakwe, his Head of Media Team,  said: “We wish to state categorically that the news is old and stale. Barrister Omatseye, a respected maritime lawyer and one-time President of African Ship-owners Association, ASA, was discharged and acquitted by Justice Yargata B. Nimpar, of the Court of Appeal, who set aside the May 20th, 2016, judgment of the embattled Justice Rita OfiliAjugomobia of the High Court, Lagos State division.
According to Justice Nimpar in the widely published story, the trial court did not properly evaluate the evidence. The long and short of it is that, the appeal succeeds. The prosecution should not ride roughshod over the Constitution. The judiciary will do the war on corruption more harm by declaring someone a criminal, where no offence has been committed. I find merit in the appeal. The lower court’sjudgment is hereby set aside and the appellant is hereby discharged and acquitted. the Judge said.
