Udacity Launches in MENA

Udacity COO Clarissa Shen, at the RiseUp Summit in Cairo, Egypt

Bringing Udacity to a new region in the world is an experience that is at once both humbling and exciting. Our mission is to democratize education—to provide every lifelong learner on the planet with access to world-class learning opportunities that will enable them to build rewarding lives.

Today, we are so proud to formally announce the launch of our Middle East and North Africa (MENA) operations!

Udacity Launches in MENA

We are grateful to the RiseUp Summit in Cairo for hosting us, and affording us the platform to announce our launch to the whole MENA region. We couldn’t think of a more fitting environment to share a message of inclusion and opportunity.

We are investing significantly in the region, opening offices in Cairo, Dubai, and Riyadh. We now have teams on the ground to support our students and partners. Our student experience is now enhanced with local payment options, and a dedicated network of mentors and reviewers to provide Arabic language support to students enrolled in our programs.

Nanodegree Programs in Arabic

Three of our most popular Nanodegree program are already available in Arabic language: Intro to Programming, Android Basics, and Android Developer—many more will become available soon.

Our groundbreaking Nanodegree programs represent an efficient, effective, and economical way for aspiring learners to acquire the most valuable skills that are in demand by leading employers across the globe. Our partnerships and collaborations with world-class organizations such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, IBM, NVIDIA, Mercedes-Benz, Baidu, Tencent, Infosys, and more ensures the up-to-the-minute relevance of our curriculum offerings.

Strategic Partnerships

Central to our efforts in the region are our strategic partnerships with governments and leading institutions. These partnerships are born of a shared vision and commitment to increasing learning opportunities for students across the Arab world. Exciting initiatives are already underway:

  • We have partnered with the Dubai government to launch the One Million Arab Coders program, an initiative led by the Dubai Future Foundation and under the patronage of His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. Together, we have the ambitious goal to enroll a million Arab youth into introductory coding courses.
  • Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, we have joined hands with the MiSK Foundation in Saudi Arabia, who is awarding 2,650 scholarships this year in Android Development, Web Development, and Data Science.
  • We have announced new partnerships in Egypt with the Ministry of ICT to introduce our Intro to Programming Nanodegree to 6,000 Egyptian high school students, and separately, with the American University in Cairo to offer Udacity Connect, our blended delivery model, on their campuses.

Arab Youth Empowerment

Together with our partners, we see incredible opportunity today in the MENA region. 60% of the population is under the age of 25, and this generation is among the most digitally connected and digitally savvy populations in the world.  And yet, youth unemployment is twice as high as the world average, and the digital economy is currently at 4% of GDP, only half of what it is in the US and other markets.

This represents a chance to transform an entire generation—and an entire region—by connecting the desire to learn, with the opportunities to succeed.

Our investment in the region represents our commitment to empower Arab youth to be job-ready in today’s economy. Today’s launch is just the beginning of an extraordinary journey we will take together with our local partners and students, as we connect lifelong learners in the MENA region with the jobs of today, tomorrow, and beyond.
