Update: Police /Shi ites clash in Kano

KANO – Heavily armed anti riot policemen Sunday afternoon clashed with members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria otherwise known as Shia in Kano.

The violent confrontation was sequel to concerted effort by security agents to thwart thousands of IMN members on street protest in the city.

Eyewitness account told Vanguard that the clash which occurred at Audu Bako secretariat at the heart of Nassarawa GRA crescendo to pandemonium as passerby and motorist scamper for safety.

Vanguard further learnt that Audu Bako secretariat and surrounding environ was cordoned by the police as sporaic gunshots rented the air.

Security sources in the city said “mobile police were shooting tear gas to disperse errant Shia members of IMN who wanted to embark on procession”

Speaking further the source disclosed that “Information available indicates that the Shia members were prevented from embarking on the procession but they instead start attacking the police who also respond with tear gas and gun fire”

At the time of this report “movement around the secretariat, state Road and other adjoining areas within GRA has been restricted by the security agents”.

Although, no casualties was reported, but there are heightened fear that scores of women and children were injured in the melee.
